CONSTITUTION Acknowledgment of God Preamble. We,
the people of Mississippi in convention assembled, grateful to Almighty God, and
invoking his blessing on our work, do ordain and establish this constitution.
Religion Clauses Article III, section
18. No religious test as a qualification for office shall be
required; and no preference shall be given by law to any religious sect or mode
of worship; but the free enjoyment of all religious sentiments and the different
modes of worship shall be held sacred. The rights hereby secured shall not be
construed to justify acts of licentiousness injurious to morals or dangerous to
the peace and safety of the state, or to exclude the Holy Bible from use in any
public school of this state.
Article X, section 225. The
Legislature may place the convicts on a state farm or farms and have them worked
thereon or elsewhere. It may also provide for the creation of a nonprofit corporation
for the purpose of managing and operating a state prison industries program which
may make use of state prisoners in its operation. It may establish a reformatory
school or schools, and provide for keeping of juvenile offenders from association
with hardened criminals. It may provide for the commutation of the sentence of
convicts for good behavior, and for the constant separation of the sexes, and
for religious worship for the convicts.
Education Article
VIII, section 208. No religious or other sect or sects shall
ever control any part of the school or other educational funds of this state;
nor shall any funds be appropriated toward the support of any sectarian school,
or to any school that at the time of receiving such appropriation is not conducted
as a free school.
